Make a Difference, Grow Our Workforce, Connect with Youth

Across the nation, there is a serious shortage of prepared public health workers.   It is estimated that by 2020 one out of every three positions will go unfilled. The workforce shortage combined with growing health threats to youth have caused CT Public Health Association (CPHA) to look to career mentoring as a solution to both issues.

In 2007, CPHA formed the Mentoring Organization Registry (MOR) with seven members. Today the MOR has 24 organizational members representing a broad range of institutions, including higher education, local and state health departments, foundations and non-profits, that collaborate on grants and free programs aimed at developing youth as future public health leaders. The MOR has fostered new relationships between public health organizations and middle and high schools reaching over 1500 students and educators in 60 communities with information on public health concepts, skills and careers. Today we are focusing our efforts on educators to show them how public health concepts and careers can help students build 21st century skills  for success in work and life. These skills include  communication, collaboration, innovation, leadership, problem solving and technology.   Often they are learned and strengthened outside the walls of school through experiences in their communities under the guidance of caring and talented adults in the workplace.

The MOR Philosophy

Unlike Fortune 500 companies that invest in company tours and internships to find young talent for their workplace, CPHA has a different attitude about spending time with youth. Even if students do not join the public health workforce, they will be more likely to contribute to a healthy community by practicing healthy behaviors, caring for the environment and becoming effective public health advocates and philanthropists. In short, as career mentors and ambassadors, we never lose when we spend time with youth.
