The Emotional Life of Patients with Chronic Diseases: A Framework for Health Promotion Strategies
Being a patient with a chronic disease is both a physical and emotional experience, one that continually demands adjustments to cope with the inherent stress of being ill. The ability to recognize a patient’s emotional health is an important part of a healthcare provider’s communication skills. Understanding the patient’s emotional health leads to improved provider-patient relationships and health outcomes. For purposes of this presentation, emotional health is defined as the way that we feel, and the way that our feelings affect us.
This presentation highlights a health promotion framework that emphasizes the emotional health of patients with a chronic disease.
