The number of premature deaths attributable to tobacco has been estimated to be 200 million during the twentieth century, and the forecast for the twenty-first century is approaching 1 billion! This year's Global Health & the Arts will focus on the science of addiction to nicotine and other substances: What are the underlying genetic and neurological risks factors for addiction in general? What are the risks and benefits of alternative nicotine delivery systems, such as e-cigarettes? How can experts from the fields of global health, scientific research, the pharmaceutical industry, and government regulation work together to reduce the devastating effects of addiction and its related illnesses? From an artistic and cultural standpoint, we will also explore the portrayal of addictive behavior through theatre and the arts.
