JOB DESCRIPTION
Health Educator/Registered Dietitian or Registered Nurse

Position Summary:
Under the general direction of the Director of Public Health, performs duties relating to the improvement of community health. P/T to F/T

Essential Job Functions-For illustrative purposes only:

To assist in conducting communicable disease follow-up.

To complete the objectives of the Preventive Health Block Grant as well as the Putting on Airs program.

To update and develop media contacts and begin developing routine press releases on pertinent public health topics that will be sent to the media.

To seek out health education and preventative health grants and apply for them with approval of the Director of Public Health.

Will assist the Public Health Emergency Response Coordinator with planning and training of non-medical staff and others related to Bioterrorism assignments.

Works with staff members and the Director of Public Health on various special projects related to community health and environmental health.

To utilize existing Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) plans and data. In conjunction with the Director, to participate in our District’s catchment area hospitals’ Community Health Needs Assessment processes as well as Community Health Improvement Plan processes.

To outreach to our communities and meet with government, hospital, social services and other agencies where appropriate to encourage health education and prevention to build bridges and coordinate as well as produce health education and prevention programs for the good of the citizens of our towns.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
General knowledge of communicable and chronic disease. Ability to prepare health promotion/disease prevention grants. Ability to work with others in planning and implementation of community health programs. Requires competency in oral and written presentations. Ability to perform related duties as needed under the direction of the Director of Public Health. Must be comfortable with public speaking and facilitating programs.

Personal Attributes:
Must be a people person with exceptional interpersonal skills. Neat and professional appearance. Emotional stability, ability to present ideas in an easily understood manner to varied audiences, to use proper judgement and tact, to work within the government structure and chain of command, and to work with the staff and the Board of Directors as a team player.

Required Qualifications:

Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Health Education, Public Health, and Nursing, Dietetics or health related field. Master’s Degree in Health Education, Public Health or another health related field is desirable. CHES-certification is a plus. Six (6) months or more of responsible experience in the field of health education is a plus. Salary will be based on qualifications.
