CPHA’s Advocacy Committee aims to increase the membership’s knowledge and understanding of, and participation in, the practice of grassroots public health advocacy at the local, state, and federal levels.

CPHA advocacy committee activities:

• Conduct periodic polling of membership to determine legislative priorities;
• Offer public health advocacy trainings, and occasional meetings with legislators and/or legislative breakfasts
• Track state public health legislation, and alert membership of upcoming opportunities for advocacy
• Prepare fact sheets to inform members about public health issues and related legislation or regulation
• Disseminate sample testimony, letters to editors, and opinion pieces for use by membership to encourage them to advocate for legislation or regulation
• Submit written testimony on behalf of CPHA to the Connecticut General Assembly regarding proposed legislation
• Maintain relationships with the leadership of the Connecticut General Assembly’s Public Health Committee and other relevant committees, the Executive Branch of the State of Connecticut and the Connecticut Department of Public Health
• Participate in coalition work with other public health organizations in Connecticut.

How to Get Involved

GET TO KNOW YOUR LEGISLATORS. Follow your legislators on social media, save their numbers in your phones, bookmark their online contact info--however you want to get in touch, they NEED to hear from you!

Find your State Senator and Representative.

ACT ON STATE LEGISLATION. Once the legislative session begins, we will provide a list on this website of the bills we are tracking, with updates and calls to action on specific ones we are watching. If there are bills you are watching that you feel should be brought to the attention of the CPHA Board, please let us know. The CT General Assembly’s Public Health Committee page can be a helpful resource to identify bills of interest, but keep in mind there may be bills in other Committees as well.

ACT ON FEDERAL LEGISLATION. If there is federal legislation which you think CPHA should endorse, please let us know.

FOLLOW OUR ALERTS. We will occasionally share information about educational sessions, community conversations, and opportunities for advocacy related to public health legislation or various public health issues. We encourage you to share opportunities with us.

GET IN TOUCH. Reach out to any of the four members of the leadership team, and we will include you in email alerts about upcoming committee meetings, trainings, calls for advocacy action, opportunities to testify on state bills, and other advocacy work as it arises.
